Glossary of Terms

ASTM Analysis

American Society for Testing Materials. ASTM certification menas that your products are biodegradable and compostable.

Bagasse

The Sugarcane fiber that remians after the extraction of the juice from the Sugarcane. It is an annualy renewable material.

Bio-Based

An organic material in which carbon is derived from a renewable resource via biological processes. Bio-based materials include al plant and animal mass derived from CO2 recently fixed via Photosynthesis, per definition of a renewable resource.

Biodegradable

Capable of decomposing rapidly by microoragnisms under natural conditions (aerobic and/ or anaerobic) Most organic materials , such as food scraps and paper are biodegradable.

Carbon Footprint

The total amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases emitted over the full life cycle of a product or service, expressed as grams of CO2 equivalents. Greenhpuse gases contribute to global warming and climate change, so reducing carbon footprint is desirable for a healthier earth.

Compostable

Waste consisting largely of biodegradable organic matter.

Compostable Waste

Waste consisting largely of biodegradable organic matter.

Cornstarch

Manufactured from corn based resins through a polymerization process. The resins are converted into foodservice items through Thermo molding and injection processes.

Energy Recovery

A method of waste management that utilizes wastes as fuels, either directly or after some processing.

Greenhouse Gases

The gases present in the atmosphere which reduce the loss of heat into space and therefore contribute to global temperatures. These can include natural gases like water vapor and CO2 as well as man-made gases like CFC's.

Greenwashing

The process by which a company publicly and misleadingly declares itself to be enviornmentally  friendly  but internally participates in enviornmentally or socially unfriendly practices.

ISO

Landfill disposal

A method of waste  disposal in which materials are buried.

Low VOC

A term referring to reduced amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in items like paints compared to traditional formulations.

Nature Friendly

Goods and services considered to inflict minimal harm on the enviornment.

Non-renewable resource

A natural resource that is unable to be regenerated or renewed fully and without loss of quality once it is used.

PET

Polyethylene terephthalate. A thermoplastic polymer resin of the polyester family and is used in synthetic fibers.

Photodegradable

Will break down into small pieces when exposed to sunlight.

PLA (Polylactic Acid)

Or Polylactide Acid is a biodegradable thermoplastic derived from a corn, beet and wheat starches through a fermentation process. A renewable resource  Lactic Acid is made from dextrose by fermentation . Dextrose is made from Cornstarch and Cornstarch is made from Carbon Dioxide and water.

Renewable-Resource

A natural resource that can be replenished within a reasonable amount of time, ideally at a rate equal to the rate of consumption.

SugarCane

Disposable, compostable & biodegradable products made from 100% bagasse. No plastic or wax lining applied.

Sustainable

Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

VOC

Any volatile organic compound that participates in  atmospheric photochemical reactions(such as smog formation), excluding a number of chemicals specifically designated  by the government as not being VOCs.

Zero waste facility

A facility that diverts all waste from going to a landfill.
